Pikelit Party!

We made pikelits this week - amid much discussion about what pikelits actually are. Are they pancakes? Well - not really. Are they crumpets? No! Do they taste good? Yes!

We started out by making sure our hands were ready for cooking...

Then we cracked some eggs...
We took turns to mix the eggs and the sugar...

Then added in some baking powder and some flour...
Opps! Forgot to bring some milk!! Whew! Luckily the office had some milk!!
We added this in and mixed it through...

Then spooned out the mixture into a hot pan. There was much discussion labout the hot pan and how to keep ourselves safe.
We felt the heat (safely)...
And everyone had a turn at flipping the pikelits...
Emm... delicious!

Kaiaka

Harakeke and the teina of the kura have been doing an athletics rotation in the past few weeks. Tamariki have been practising pekeroa (long jump), tūpeke (high jump), peke tāepa (hurdles), pekerere (frisbee. tennis balls/shotput, bean bags) as well as short and long distance running. All in preparation for the teina athletics on Monday (weather permitting).

This week we were working on our throwing skills...

Exploratory painting

We were feeling deeply the contraints of being five and fitting into the school environment! We wanted to finish the week with a bit of freedom for some tired five year olds.

First we set up like this...

At first the tamariki were a little shy to start...
Then things started to gather momentum! Can we use this? Can I do that?
Then... lot's of laughter and giggling and the exploration really began...

The washing up was fun too...
Sometimes the pakeke are having just as much fun as the tamariki...

It was a good day all 'round...
The finished artwork is on dispaly in the cloakbay!

Lunchtime at Ōtaki Kura - Playshed edition...

Here’s what we got up to at lunchtime today at Ōtaki Kura! Here you can see

technological development in action - an essential part of the curriculum for

our tamariki in this changing world. Ideas being shared and developed!

Our mātāpono are alive in these tamariki also.

Whakapapa - some of the things created are made over several

sessions, with ideas being developed each time.

Whānaungatanga - Tuākana, teina relationships in action.

Kaitiakitanga - giving materials that would have been thrown away a second lease of life.

Looking after these materials to ensure we have them a long time to use in our play.

Manaakitanga - taking turns, negotiating, helping each other to move things.

Ngā rangatira a āpōpō!
