Lunchtime at Ōtaki Kura - Playshed edition...

Here’s what we got up to at lunchtime today at Ōtaki Kura! Here you can see

technological development in action - an essential part of the curriculum for

our tamariki in this changing world. Ideas being shared and developed!

Our mātāpono are alive in these tamariki also.

Whakapapa - some of the things created are made over several

sessions, with ideas being developed each time.

Whānaungatanga - Tuākana, teina relationships in action.

Kaitiakitanga - giving materials that would have been thrown away a second lease of life.

Looking after these materials to ensure we have them a long time to use in our play.

Manaakitanga - taking turns, negotiating, helping each other to move things.

Ngā rangatira a āpōpō!

Ōtaki Kite Festival

Leading into one of the biggest events on the Ōtaki calendar - the Ōtaki Kite Festival we made kites! A lovely way to finish off a busy week at Ōtaki Kura...

It was a hot Friday afternoon and we were glad to be outside with our kites...

Mai miria te kakara...

Wiki 6 - week 6 saw us travel north to learn about tohu whenua - Miria te kakara, and to visit Te Hiiri and Poupatatē Marae.

Here we are boarding the bus...

The journey is always a big part of the adventure!

First we stopped off in Sanson to visit the wharepaku... with the added bonus of visiting the playground...

We visited Te Hiiri Marae

Then on to Poupatatē

It was a big day... too big for some...

Greedy Cat

The Greedy Cat series of books by Joy Cowley are very popular with tamariki of the the nohinohi. They are facinated by this cat that is cheeky enough to steal kai from mum's shopping bag.

Gobble, gobble, gobble... has become a bit of a catchphrase in Harakeke this year, often heard at lunchtime as we gobble, gobble, gobble our kai - until "that was the end of that!"

Some mahi toi to celebrate our love of this ngeru whakatoi...

Ko Harakeke tēnei! Introducing Harakeke!

Ko Harakeke tēnei! Introducing Harakeke!

As every tamaiti starts at Ōtaki Kura we work on this mahi toi as a means of getting to know each other. We have many tamaiti manaaki in our akomanga. Already at 5 they see themselves as people who will help others.

"When I’m an adult I will be at work. Police work."
"When I’m an adult I could be a knight. To guard a princess's castle."
"If I had a superhero power it would be flying to the sky and when someone is in trouble I’d go to them."

These pikitia (pictures) hang in our cloakbay. Nau mai haere mai!

Nā tātou te whiwhi ki te noho i te taha o ēnei tamariki. We are so lucky to be alongside these tamariki. Ngā rangatira ā āpōpō. Leaders of tomorrow.
